The Crazies + Greenpeace, an Interactive

As a part of a campaign to tie the film The Crazies (2009) to the issue of security and safety at chemical facilities, TakePart and Greenpeace created this interactive piece to explore the threat posed by these facilities within the United States. I was responsible for concepting, art directing, design and some writing.

This early concept for the homepage of the Members Project microsite was a fun exploration of this cut paper diorama style. It was later abandoned in favor of a photographic/video approach that better linked up with the television campaign.

Levi’s Broadside, A Poster

This was a quick job for an in-store promo poster for Levi’s. A little concepting, a little writing… a little broadsiding. Because who doesn’t love the broadside?

SPAMasterpiece Theater, A Title Card

I was lucky enough to contribute some title cards to the brilliant BoingBoingTV series SPAMasterpiece Theater. The caricature of John Hodgman is adequate to the task, but I maintain that portraiture is not my strong suit.

The Summer of Aught Eight, A Wedding Invitation

Some letterpress, a muslin bag, an improvised envelope, and a great many hours of hard work all produced this lovely wedding invitation. Told as a story across the front of six cards, the invitation was intended to serve as the ultimate heirloom of the occasion, one in which all participants could share.

The cards were printed at Evolution Press in Seattle. The envelope was printed at Secord Printing in Kirkland.

Film.com, A Media Site

While I was at RealNetworks, I had the opportunity to act as creative lead at launch for their new site Film.com. Creating an enterprise website is a long and arduous process, fortunately one in which I have a good deal of experience. That having been said, I think Film.com was the first site I can both share (because it isn’t proprietary… Microsoft!) and that I’m proud of.

A menu for a restaurant for cats. Fun little bit of production graphic design. I’d love to have made it more complicated, given it a richer amount of typography, but it reads well at a distance.

BioDiesel, A Logo

I had a thought that the only thing holding biodiesel back was poor branding. If we could just sex it up, maybe this fuel alternative won’t have to fight such an uphill battle. My early attempts to push this “open source branding” met with little success, but I’m still interested in the idea of communal branding of social causes. Hrm…

I’ve looked at a lot of the other biodiesel logos out there, and I’m fairly certain they all suck. When I created this logo, I was adamant that it should be something that would look as good on the back window of a VW TDI as it would on the side of a biodiesel pump. I think this works.

Happy Endings, an Ad

Film.com and I created this ad to run during SIFF. The brand position expressed in the tag line isn’t easy to concept to; overly broad positions get overly generic ads. I think we did a good job finding something provocative.

Co-written with Ted Kuoppomaki, art direction by me.

Hand + Eye + Tree, A Metal Card

When I designed the metal business card for Hand + Eye, I was also asked to come up with a special holiday design. Taking my lead from an old holiday papercraft, I designed a card that could pop up into a tree. By placing the tip of a pen at the center of the rings and pushing up, the stylized tree becomes apparent… apparently.
