This was a quick job for an in-store promo poster for Levi’s. A little concepting, a little writing… a little broadsiding. Because who doesn’t love the broadside?

The Summer of Aught Eight, A Wedding Invitation

Some letterpress, a muslin bag, an improvised envelope, and a great many hours of hard work all produced this lovely wedding invitation. Told as a story across the front of six cards, the invitation was intended to serve as the ultimate heirloom of the occasion, one in which all participants could share.

The cards were printed at Evolution Press in Seattle. The envelope was printed at Secord Printing in Kirkland.

Happy Endings, an Ad

Film.com and I created this ad to run during SIFF. The brand position expressed in the tag line isn’t easy to concept to; overly broad positions get overly generic ads. I think we did a good job finding something provocative.

Hand + Eye + Tree, A Metal Card

When I designed the metal business card for Hand + Eye, I was also asked to come up with a special holiday design. Taking my lead from an old holiday papercraft, I designed a card that could pop up into a tree. By placing the tip of a pen at the center of the rings and pushing up, the stylized tree becomes apparent… apparently.

The photographer and craftsman Todd Schellinger asked me to design some metal business cards for his studio Hand + Eye. He gave me pretty broad creative license, asking only that it speak to the tradition of craftsmanship that he brings to each job.

Designing for metal presents many challenges and opportunities. I knew from the start that I wanted to make something that would transform from one state of being to another. What I ended up producing was a semi-articulated metal hand that could hold onto an envelope or an invoice.

Rude gestures are left to the imagination.

UPDATE: Since folk were interested in learning more about these cards, I put up some more information.

Microsoft Art Collection, Some Work

For 3.5 years I acted as art director for the Microsoft Art Collection. This work would manifest itself as a brochure every six months, a catalog of new work… once, an annual report. It was good work, and I was happy to have it.

I was able to massage the Collection’s materials into some sort of brand. What sort, I’m unsure. Probably a Microsoft-type sort… yeah.

A Wedding, An Invitation

Screenprinting, some offset, rubber stamps, a few late nights assembling and stuffing envelopes… all produced this heirloom invitation. A mix of well printed materials and personal handicrafts made this an invitation to remember.

The RSVP required detaching the back of the card “foldover” and dropping it in the post. This gave me an early lesson in heirloom design: people don’t like destroying the neat things you send them.

The Book of Circles, A Project

This was a personal project, just some typographic explorations, really. I’ve always been pleased with the result.

Eventually, I’d like to return to the idea of a long-form typographic narrative; something that tells a story without getting tiresome with its type trickery.
